The Lower Florida Keys Flats and Backcountry

An area over 100 square miles in size, the term backcountry is used to describe the many mangrove Keys, not accessible by road, that make the Lower Florida Keys. This area is riddled with channels, basins, and vast sprawling shallow water flats. Providing shelter from any wind direction, this large area is also breathtaking during calm conditions. Most flats fishing takes place here due to the vast amount of options.

The Key West Lakes Passage

The Key West Lakes Passage

Directly west of Key West, the Lakes Passage is an area surrounded by extremely large and wide open flats fed by few tidal driven channels. Protected from both north and south winds, the Lakes remain relatively calm and provide a great fishing environment where the water is always gin-clear. Though wide open as it is, fly fisherman generally find themselves elsewhere during windy conditions. Calm conditions and correct time of year can make for epic flats fishing in this area.

The Marquesas
Over twenty miles west of Key West, the cause of its circular existence is somewhat unknown. Thought to be an ancient atoll or sea mount, the Marquesas certainly offer a unique flats fishing experience. Far from civilization, Marquesas fishing generally requires an early morning departure, calm conditions, and a full day of fishing.
