Lower Florida Keys Bonefishing Outlook
The bonefish must have started it all. When it comes to shallow water sight fishing on fly or light tackle, it doesn’t get much sportier. Fast and almost transparent to the naked eye, bonefish prove their ranking amongst saltwater trophy fish around the world. Considered a very wary and hard fish to catch, bonefish have certainly built themselves quite the reputation in the Lower Florida Keys and Key West fishing world.
Though the nature of this fish can be quite demanding of an angler, strategic and systematic methods exist that catch even the most novice of anglers multiple bonefish in the Lower Florida Keys. With that being said, it is also evident that Florida’s lower Keys bonefish population is on the rise. Whether it’s due to the almost extinct shrimping industry that once ruled Key West. Or the now outlawed sharking industry that flourished in the Lower Florida Keys more recent history. Both theories have not been proven, though one thing is for sure, bonefish are certainly not scarce in the Lower Florida Keys and Key West. In-fact, with the right time of year and know how, lower Keys bonefishing alone can be worth the trip.
Whether bonefish are tailing on a flat calm sunrise, traveling over crystal clear grass flats in large schools, or just by them selves. Bonefish posses the ability to take a hook and run past the hills with it. Caught using ultra light means of tackle, bonefish can pull well over a hundred yards of line off a fishing reel at speeds indescribable.
The best time of year for bonefish in the Lower Florida Keys and Key West is between the months of March and November. Average bonefish size for the Lower Florida Keys and Key West is between 4 and 7 pounds with the largest bonefish present between the months of September and November. These Fall-fishing months will produce bonefish over the 10 pound range, and are a great time of year to fish the Lower Florida Keys and Key West. With ample opportunities in each day, bonefish remain as a Key Flat Charter’s favorite.
